The 23 year old has started just one Premier League fixture this season, and even then he was hauled off at half-time, and a January exit seems entirely plausible.

Alan Pardew isn’t the only manager keen on the England man with the likes of Sunderland and QPR also keen on the speedy winger.

Townsend had an up and down time of it last term, at times superb but on the whole largely ineffective, though he is undoubtedly too good a player to be left warming the White Hart Lane bench.

The likes of Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Aaron Lennon are all ahead of Townsend in the club’s pecking order.

A move to St James’ Park may prove tempting given the Magpies good run of form and by all accounts Mauricio Pochettino is ready to offload Townsend with an initial loan move perhaps the most likely form of departure.
