The striker has been linked to Anfield as an answer to the lack of goals that the club have suffered from this season. His amazing form in Ligue 1 is what has led to these transfer rumours, with the 23-year-old having already scored a brilliant 19 goals in 25 appearances this season.

However, the hopes of Reds manager Brendan Rodgers will have been hit by the comments made by Lyon boss Fournier.

The 47-year-old says that the player is happy in France, and that the club president has reassured him that the striker will not be leaving the club.

“I’m not the best person to speak about it. If it was only up to me, of course I would like him to stay,” he told RMC.

“But the president has rather reassured me, and above all, I don’t get the impression Alexandre wants to leave during the January transfer window.”

This will put a dent in the Merseyside club’s transfer plans as they look to bring in reinforcements to help kickstart their so far disappointing season. They may now have to look elsewhere for a player to improve their front line.
