The man who clinched Liverpool a point at the weekend with a vital header against Arsenal deep into injury time, Martin Skrtel, reckons the result will invigorate his side’s season…

The Slovakian’s late, late effort earned the Reds a 2-2 draw at Anfield, which was thoroughly deserved after completely dominating their opponents. it was especially impressive considering the fact he had a huge gash on his head following an earlier clash with Olivier Giroud.

Although the result wasn’t exactly what fans wanted, Skrtel thinks the performance proves that Liverpool can climb from 10th in the table to finish in the Champions League places this season.

“The goal and the performance can help turn things around because there has been a lot of criticism of us,” he told the Telegraph.

“It will change and be better in the second half of the season. In the last three games against Manchester United, Bournemouth and Arsenal we have shown great performances and we need to keep going this way. Then the results will be better.

“It is closer to how we played last season, especially the last three games. We moved the ball well and created a lot of chances. We need to improve a few things and it will be better for us. It is different but it is working. We played a few games last season like this.”

Skrtel’s goal was his first of the season, despite being the top-scoring defender in European football during the 2013/14 campaign.

Since his manager Brendan Rodgers decided to switch to a 3-4-3, Skrtel’s looked more comfortable with Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho beside him.

Liverpool now have a relatively easy run of games coming up, and will need to maintain their performance levels is they have realistic chance of finishing in the top four.
