Asked on social media who he would choose to fill the role, Evans responded: “Me, I’d give it to Sanchez. He cares and has that will to win I don’t see elsewhere across the team.”

Evans also criticised Mertesacker for his performance in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool. He said: “Don’t really see a leader there. Did you see Mertesacker’s pathetic attempt on Skrtel’s goal? He was hunched over, flinching. Amazing.”

The German, who has worn the captains armband in the absence of the injured Arteta, has received plenty of criticism from Arsenal fans for his indifferent performances so far this season, while Arteta has managed just 12 appearances in all competitions.

On Sunday, with Arsenal leading 2-1 against Skrtel’s Liverpool, Mertesacker allowed the Slovakian defender to beat him to the ball in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, and head home the equaliser.

In contrast, Sanchez has been Arsenal’s stand-out player so far this season, with the Chilean World Cup star scoring 14 goals in all competitions, nine of which have come in the league.
