Schneiderlin has been strongly linked with a move away from St Mary’s since the summer and it was thought the presence of Mauricio Pochettino as manager at Spurs would tempt him to White Hart Lane.

Pochettino was part of a mass exodus from the Saints over the summer, with the Argentine boss joined by five key players in exiting the club and the France international was also keen on a move.

However, the Hampshire side did not want to part with Schneiderlin and were annoyed by Tottenham for making what they deemed a derisory £10m offer for their prized asset.

It turns out that the 25-year-old would have rejected a reunion with Pochettino in any case as the midfield ace would prefer to join their North London rivals.

The Gunners are also very keen on landing Schneiderlin, with Arsene Wenger a big admirer of his fellow Frenchman and the squad in dire need of a defensive midfielder.

It’s thought it would cost around £25m to bring the former Strasbourg man to the Emirates Stadium, but the player himself is ready to make the move and Wenger has been watching the French star since he was a teenager.
