As the Metro reported both Arsenal and Chelsea were keen on signing the Croatia international before he made the switch to the Vicente Calderon Stadium from Bayern Munich over the summer.

Since then Mandzukic has been in decent form for the defending La Liga champions, scoring 14 goals in 22 matches in all competitions for Atleti.

Yet now the Citizens have shown interest in the 28-year-old just six months after he arrived in the Spanish capital as manager Manuel Pellegrini has concerns about fitness issues in attack.

Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic have all had spells on the sidelines this season and Pellegrini is worried that his side won’t be able to keep up with current league leaders Chelsea in the title race.

Initially the Chilean had targeted Newcastle United star Papiss Cisse, but has decided to look elsewhere since the Magpies slapped a £35m price-tag on the Senegal international.

Aguero is currently out until the end of January and Dzeko and Jovetic are both sidelined for several weeks, meaning a new attacker in the New Year remains a priority and Mandzukic could well fit the bill perfectly.
