Romero has been with Sampdoria in Italy since 2011, but spend last season on loan at AS Monaco, making just three league appearance. Despite being out of favour at club level, he has continued to impress an an international level.

Liverpool are desperate for a new number one, having dropped Simon Mignolet earlier this month in favour of Brad Jones. However, the Australian has also struggled to impress, and the Reds are desperate for a new signing in the January window.

City signed Willy Caballero in the summer, and also have veteran Richard Wright as competition for England number one Joe Hart. But Romero could be available on the cheap, and City have never been one to pass up adding competition to their squad.
