The Premier League champions have been impressed by the form of the former Chelsea midfielder, who was a surprise loan signing this summer after he quit the Blues for a move to the US.

Still, with New York City’s season not starting until March, Lampard has been able to continue playing in England to keep himself at full fitness and form, establishing himself as a key player for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

City now hope they can keep Lampard for longer than expected, with mid-February now the target as talks continue with New York City over the 36-year-old’s future.

Pellegrini himself has stated that he is confident of securing a deal, but also that he cannot gurantee it at this point as it is ultimately not City’s final decision.

“Yes, I am confident he’ll stay, but I can’t say 100 per cent because it doesn’t depend just on me,” he said.
