Louis van Gaal’s side are on a good run of form at the moment with seven wins out of their last eight league games, with a convincing 3-1 win at home to Newcastle United the latest in a recent run of results.

With no distraction of European football after a disappointing 7th place finish last season, United are in a similar position to that of Liverpool last season, as they focused solely on the league and came close to claiming a shock title win towards the end of the campaign, though they did ultimately miss out to eventual champions Manchester City.

Still, Scholes is optimistic that United can keep taking advantage of their lack of games and become genuine competitors alongside Chelsea and City this term.

“If United win their next two games, I wouldn’t be surprised if they do what Liverpool did last year – go on a great run, a big run, and put pressure on the top two,” said the former England international.

“Then, once you get to the Champions League, United will have the free weeks and hopefully they can take advantage.”
