Mario Balotelli will not be leaving Liverpool on loan this January insists Brendan Rodgers, despite heavy links to Serie A, reports the Independent.

The Italian star has struggled during his second spell in the Premier League, and has failed to live up to expectations following his £16m move last summer.

Rodgers claims he has no intention of letting the 24-year-old leave in January however, and believes there is still much more to come from his side this season.

“It is not something I have even thought about, to be honest,” the Liverpool manager said. “We have had a lot of games this season and a lot of competitions and at this moment, the key for me is trying to keep this squad together.”

With Daniel Sturridge spending most of the season on the doctor’s table, the Merseyside manager turned to Balotelli. He failed to produce however, despite being given countless chances.

He has now seen himself relegated to the bench, with Rodgers preferring to play Raheem Sterling as a false nine instead.

With Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini the only competition, the former Manchester City man is likely to remain second choice behind the pacey young Englishman. Rodgers may be forced to dip back into the transfer market in January though, especially if Sturridge’s injury problems continue.
