The 33-year-old’s return to action this season has coincided with a big improvement in form from Louis van Gaal’s side, and it looks as though the England international is now seen as key to the Dutchman’s plans.

Although United spent big in the summer on midfielders Ander Herrera and Daley Blind, it seems the club could continue to build around Carrick instead of pursuing even more big-name signings in that position.

Carrick’s current contract expires in the summer and could leave him free to walk away from Old Trafford, but it is now expected that the Red Devils will begin talks over an extension to his stay in Manchester.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has been ever-present for United since joining the club in 2006, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League in that time.
