The summer signing made his first Premier League start for the club in the midday match against the Old Trafford based side. He was even amazed at playing so early in the day.

The Frenchman has been a regular in the cup competitions, but hadn’t made much of an impact in the league before the game on the weekend. He claims that the match made him realise that playing against the big clubs is on a another level. The midfielder was asked to man mark Wayne Rooney, and says that he found the role hard work.

“I had never played at midday in my life,” he told L’Equipe. “You eat pasta at 9am. It is a bit special. I took vitamin C tablets to wake me up. But emotionally, it was magnificent. My father was happy: ‘Do you realise? You are alongside Mata, Rooney, Van Persie…’

“I am usually on holiday at this time of the year. Now I am playing against world-class players. I had only played against them on Playstation. It is this kind of match which makes you realise that it is on another level,” he added.

The coach asked us to go to war,” Stambouli went on. “I was asked to man-mark Rooney. He is very strong – a legend in England. But you can’t spend the 90 minutes watching him. If you let these players express themselves, you are dead.

“Even while being man-marked, he was playing everything one-touch. He sees everything. Keeping him quiet is complicated. If you did not see much of him, all the better!” he exclaimed.

Spurs’ next match is against Chelsea on New Years Day, and they will be looking to add to the worries the Stamford Bridge outfit experienced in their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday.
