The goalkeeper has put in some great performances over the last 12 months, and has helped to make sure that the Red Devils’ slide from the top has not been as drastic as it could have been.

Neville mentions his ability to save the Mancunian club from the poor manner in which they have been playing as the major factor behind his choice for player of the year.

“I’ve gone with David de Gea,” the former defender explained.

“Man United are third in the league, their form hasn’t been fantastic but de Gea has been absolutely outstanding.

“I think they’ve made more mistakes than anybody in the league but he’s saved them time and time again. He has been outstanding.”

United have gone unbeaten for the last nine matches, and some talk has started of them joining the title race, de Gea’s performances have been a major part of this resurgence under Louis van Gaal.

They will be hoping for this form to continue against Stoke City on New Year’s day, where they need a win to stay in third in the league.
