According to the Telegraph, Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football, was in the Anfield stands to watch Bony play for Swansea against Liverpool on Monday night and the club have made discreet enquiries over his potential availability.

Bony is one of a handful of top strikers whom a club the size of City might be able to sign in January and would be eligible to play for the club in the Champions League when the knockout stages start in February.

City face having to spend around £50m in transfer fee and wages if they decide to follow up their interest in Bony after Swansea took the £19m release clause out of the Ivory Coast international’s contract in November.

The 26-year-old signed an extension until 2018 last month, and that means they can demand top dollar for a player that is preparing to depart for the African Cup of Nations at the start of next year.

Although he is happy at the Liberty Stadium, it is believed Bony is keen to eventually test himself at the top level and play Champions League football, while injuries to Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic have forced City to play without a recognised striker for their last three Premier League games.

Liverpool have also expressed an interest in Bony in the past, most notably in the past, but they look to have moved on to new targets after being repeatedly turned away by the Swans.
