The 25-year-old has been a key figure for the Saints this term, starring regularly in their surprise push for a Champions League spot.

The Saints already have a £6.3m agreement in place to make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign, although Atletico have a £1.5m buyout clause installed to cancel the agreement.

Koeman wants to tie his future down quickly before their rivals get any bright ideas about beating them to his signature.

Alderweireld’s teammate on the south coast Matt Targett said: “Toby is a great guy and on the pitch he is amazing. He would be a great signing and I hope we can sign him.

“He has been amazing since he came in. Week in, week out he has been consistently one of the best players for us. He was a great signing, he has done really well.”

Alderweireld’s partnership with Jose Fonte has formed the second most airtight defence in the Premier League this term behind current leaders Chelsea.
