The Netherlands international is in the final year of his current contract at Villa Park and has been heavily linked with a move away in the January transfer window.

It’s thought an offer of around £8m would be enough to tempt Vlaar from his current club, but Weimann says that the centre-back should stay put.

“Ron is our captain so everyone knows he’s important so hopefully he’ll stay. He’s in the middle of our team and we hope he’ll stay,” the Austria international was quoted by the Daily Express.

“He knows we all want him to stay and I’m sure the gaffer and everyone else will try and get him to stay.”

Southampton are also understood to be keen on the Dutchman as all three Premier League sides fight for the signing of the defender.

The Gunners have struggled at the back this season with injuries meaning they have had to call upon Under-21 player Hector Bellerin and play left-back Nacho Monreal in central defence.

United meanwhile are also looking for improvement in defence with question marks over the capabilities of Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.
