Despite his side’s run of good form of late van Gaal will still be a little concerned by his defence’s inability to keep things tight at the back and it’s no surprise that the Dutch manager would look to resolve the situation.

Van Gaal knows Vlaar well from his time in charge of the Netherlands and the 29 year old will be available on a free transfer in the summer and is a solid option to help steady things in the centre of his defence.

A move for Everton’s Coleman may prove trickier as a number of sides would no doubt target the Republic of Ireland international.

The 26 year old has been in superb form over the past 18 months but the Toffees have struggled and Roberto Martinez may fail to keep hold of the wide-man if a big money offer if made.

Coleman would certainly represent a huge improvement on the likes of Rafael and Luis Antonio Valencia and the former Sligo Rovers man may feel the time is right to consider a high-profile move to a side that can offer him a first taste of Champions League action.
