The Dutchman is happy that the supporters gave him time to prove himself after a poor start to the season. He says that he has never had the same level of loyalty from the fans at his previous clubs, mentioning the various ways in which they have protested against him in the past.

The 63-year-old struggled early on his tenure, managing to get just thirteen points from their first ten games. However, he has got the team in to form in recent times. The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last ten games and drew 1-1 in their most recent match against Stoke City.

“I’m thanking the fans because they were very important in my first six months,” he told reporters.

“The club, the fans,” Van Gaal replied when asked what had surprised him most since his arrival at the club. “I have never had the experience that when you lose or draw at home the fans are still applauding for you, showing their belief in you. Never.”

“In Barcelona, the white handkerchiefs. In Bayern, whistles. In Amsterdam, Ajax, they are shouting. Here, they are applauding – stand up and applaud. Unbelievable.”

Manchester United are currently third in the table, but a chance at a title challenge looks to be slipping away as they continue to draw against teams lower in the division.
