Manchester United transfer news
The Netherlands international is widely regarded as one of the top central midfield players in Europe at the moment, having shone brightly at the Stadio Olimpico since his move from PSV last season.
United have long been linked with a move to lure him away from Roma quickly, but they have not so far managed to strike a deal with the Italian giants.
This could now allow Real Madrid to swoop for his signature, with Carlo Ancelotti known to be looking at a number of other options in that position, such as Borussia Monchengladbach star Christoph Kramer and Cruzeiro’s Brazilian starlet Lucas Silva.
This would be a major blow for United in their long search for a quality replacement for the legendary Paul Scholes.
