Sissoko has been continually linked with the Gunners as Arsene Wenger searches for a defensive midfielder to help strengthen his brittle side.

According to L’Equipe the North Londoers are now actively trying to sign the Newcastle man but will have to pay £15m, a hefty portion of their £20m January transfer budget to acquire the 25 year old.

Sissoko’s contract ends in 2019 according to the French newspaper and would be a difficult target to acquire, particularly halfway through a season, following the managerial upheaval at St James’ Park.

The move would see the Magpies make a neat profit on the £2m they paid for Sissoko in 2013, but may not be enough to convince them to make the deal.

L’Equipe also say Arsenal will turn to long term target Sami Khedira if their move for the French international fails, however Bayern Munich are also believed to be interested.
