Gerard has just six months left on his current contract at Anfield and whilst the captain was willing to sign an extension, the club’s hierarchy were not prepared to meet his demands on wages and length of a new one.

That means that after 17 years in the Reds first team the 34-year-old will leave Merseyside next summer and it looks as if a lucrative move to the USA beckons for the midfielder.

LA Galaxy are currently leading the way for Gerrard’s signature, although two other unnamed American teams are also keen to land the Englishman.

The skipper would follow in the footsteps of former international teammates David Beckham and more recently Frank Lampard by heading to MLS in the latter stages of his career.

Gerrard is arguably the Merseysiders’ greatest ever player, winning the FA Cup twice, League Cup three times, UEFA Cup and Champions League during his time with the club.

However, this campaign has seen the midfield ace criticised for his performances and it was always likely that manager Brendan Rodgers would start using the veteran less and less in his starting XI.
