The Blues boss is hopeful that the injury will not prove to be serious, but is likely to start Petr Cech against Watford in the FA Cup this weekend just in case.

Courtois injured his finger in the first half against Spurs, but despite concerns was able to carry on in the second half. He could do nothing to stem the tide however, Mauricio Pochettino’s side putting five past him during a thrilling end to end match.

“He (Courtois) has a problem in one of his fingers. Let’s see what happens,” Mourinho said.

“I don’t know (if it’s broken). I didn’t ask. I just asked if he could carry on at half-time (at Spurs).”

Chelsea have been superb so far this season, but have seen their form slip slightly over the busy Christmas period. Having been initially tipped to run away with the Premier League title, they have had to watch as Manchester City rapidly closed the gap.

Despite an eight point gap between first and second at one point in the season, the two teams are now separated by nothing more than goal difference.
