Borussia Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan set to leave Signal Iduna Park.

Manchester United are in pole position to sign Borussia Dortmund playmaker Ilkay Gundogan, report the Express, with the German international looking likely to leave Signal Iduna Park after informing the club that he is not interested in penning an extended contract with the surprise Bundesliga strugglers.

United are unlikely to be the only Premier League team interested in bringing the silky 24 year-old to English football, however, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all also linked with a player who has been one of the fulcrums of Jurgen Klopp’s successful Dortmund team in recent years, despite a number of injury problems.

Signed from domestic rivals Nurnberg in 2011, Gundogan has proven to be a midfielder perfectly suited to the high intensity, creative game favoured by Klopp, forming a fine partnership with Nuri Sahin in the centre of midfield – although injuries have restricted Gundogan to just eight caps for Germany so far.

Having informed Dortmund that he is not willing to extend his contract at the club, however, they are likely to look to cash in on Gundogan to avoid a repeat of the situation that arose with Robert Lewandowski, who departed for bitter domestic rivals Bayern Munich on a free transfer in the summer.
