In an interview with BBC Sport’s Football Focus, Henderson said that none of the Liverpool squad had any clue the captain was deciding to quit Anfield and that everyone thought he would eventually extend his contract.
“No-one had a clue [that he was leaving],” said the Liverpool vice captain.
“Obviously, we’d seen stuff in the papers, stuff about when he was going to renew his contract but I think everyone thought that it would get done eventually but obviously they’ve come to an agreement and Stevie decided it’s time for something different.”
Asked whether he thought the team would now be able to get used to the idea of the talismanic Reds captain leaving as he still had five months left at the club, Henderson wasn’t certain.
“I’m not too sure really, it’ll be difficult because he’s such a leader of our group and such a figure head and he has been for many years so it’ll be a shock to everyone especially us as players and we’ve just got to try and deal with its best we can.”
