Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has reportedly been monitoring Westwood’s form recently as he looks for a new first choice goalkeeper in the wake of Simon Mignolet’s downturn in fortune.

With an eye on strengthening his options between the sticks, Rodgers had been hoping to make a £2m bid for the Ireland stopper later this month.

But the 30-year-old has apparently pledged to repay the faith Wednesday showed by bringing him to Hillsborough last summer by staying loyal to the Championship outfit.

Having first been linked with a move to be Joe Hart’s understudy at Manchester City but instead opted to move to Hillsborough in order to become the first choice stopper there following a frustrating stint at Sunderland.

“They gave me the chance to kick-start my career again, and I’m really happy to be here,” he said.

“Sometimes things just fit, and I am enjoying my football because Wednesday are a fantastic club to play for.

“I have taken to the club, the fans have taken to me, and I’m delighted with how things have gone. I am so pleased to be with a club I feel are going places, and long may that continue.”
