The 26-year-old has been missed despite summer recruit Danny Welbeck thriving in his place.

However, he now looks set to return to the squad against Stoke City on January 11.

Ozil has yet to light up the stage following a big-money move from Real Madrid 18 months ago, and speaking to Bild, the 26-year-old admitted that he is relishing the challenge of competing for silverware once he makes his return to the pitch.

“I worked hard, with Klaus Eder in Donaustauf and with Arsenal, and I want to finally return to the field. Watching [Arsenal whilst being] injured has been very bitter for me,” he said.

“I really want to help my teams catch up. Arsenal and the national team.

“In the Premier League anything can happen. A lot can also happen in the Champions League, and we [Germany] are still involved in the European Championship qualifiers, where we need to score.”
