The 20 year old has been in ongoing talks with his Anfield employers over a new contract and the youngster has apparently already turned down an offer of £70k a week.

Bernabeu president Florentino Perez is keen to make the most of Sterling’s vulnerable situation by offering the Anfield starlet a deal in excess of £120k a week.

This source cites Steven Gerrard’s imminent departure as a bonus for Real Madrid with the midfield veteran something of a father figure for Sterling and his exit in the summer could offer renewed hope for the Spanish giants.

Should Liverpool fail to secure a Champions League berth for next term then one imagines their grip on Sterling may further loosen.

Despite his tender years Sterling, who moved to Merseyside from QPR in 2010, has already made 102 appearances for Liverpool and has 13 national team caps to his name.

One would imagine that any successful move for Sterling would have to entail the departure of one of Carlo Ancelotti’s current stellar crop of attackers with the Italian already having to find room for Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez.

Sterling has most recently been used in a central striking role due to the inability of either Rickie Lambert or Mario Balotelli to make an impact since their summer arrivals, an issue that has been exacerbated by the loss of Daniel Sturridge through injury.
