24 year old England man Henderson is currently Liverpool’s vice-captain and is seen by Rodgers as the ideal man to fill the void that will be left by Gerrard’s move to the MLS, the Northern Irishman stating;

“I think Jordan Henderson has all the leadership attributes, that was one of the reasons I made him vice-captain…he had no greater captain to learn from than Steven,” Rodgers told reporters.

“He was benefiting from his example even before he was vice-captain, but certainly in that new role he has been in pole position in terms of learning from a great, how the job works on and off the field.

“So when the day comes that Steven does move on we feel we have someone there to offer the same wisdom and knowledge even if he is a different type of player.”

Henderson came in for a fair amount of criticism in his first season at the club but has matured into a very capable performer with limitless reserves of energy.

Last term the former Sunderland man was one of Liverpool’s top players though has perhaps gone off the boil during the current campaign, though this could be said of just about every member of Rodgers’ squad.
