Both full-backs had to be hauled off during the 2-0 FA Cup Third Round victory over Yeovil Town on Sunday and youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair finished the match at Huish Park at right and left-back.

However, against the Saints van Gaal would have been hoping to call upon more established figures than the two inexperienced starlets, but his choices are extremely limited if Rafael and Shaw both miss out.

This is because in recent times usual wingers Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young have been used as makeshift wing-backs and impressed, but both men are already confirmed as being absent with thigh and hamstring issues respectively.

With Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo also injured – two more options at left-back – van Gaal is left with something of a selection headache ahead of a game with one of the best teams in the league this season.

The Dutchman has used more players this term than any other side from the English top flight, with 37 being fielded by the 63-year-old since taking charge at Old Trafford.
