The German has been out of action for the last three months due to a knee ligament injury. The midfielder will be returning to the starting XI that has been ravaged by injuries in recent weeks alongside Mathieu Flamini.

Meanwhile Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck will both have late fitness tests to see if they are able to make it for the match. Mikel Arteta looks certain to be spending another week on the sidelines.

Manager Arsene Wenger has been heartened by Francis Coquelin’s performances while these player have been ruled out, and so may not bring the players straight back into the team.

“I want him to have a future here,” the Frenchman said.

“He is one of the players who has gone through difficult times but he kept his focus, worked very hard and I hope he will be rewarded for that. He has matured.”

The Gunners have an important next two games against Stoke and Manchester City. They have a historically poor record against the Potters, while they will be up against one of the genuine title challengers in the Sky Blues.
