They do need some defensive cover at Anfield…

Liverpool have been linked with what would be a shocking swap deal for former Manchester United captain and current Inter Milan player Nemanja Vidic, reports the Metro.

The Reds could potentially swap the defender with midfielder Lucas, who Inter are supposed to be interested in. The Italian club’s manager Roberto Mancini is apparently very keen on signing the Brazilian but doesn’t have much money to work with. As such, Vidic could be used as a makeweight in any deal.

The Anfield outfit do have problems with their back line, but having paid £20 million for Dejan Lovren and £18 million for Mamadou Sakho in recent seasons are not thought to want to spend much on any new defenders in the near future. Even so, the former Red Devils captain would be a major surprise signing.

The Serbian made three hundred appearances for the Merseyside club’s fierce rivals and it is unlikely that either side’s fans would completely accept the transfer with open arms.
