Arsene Wenger is reportedly ready to try his luck with a move for Atletico Madrid star Mario Mandzukic after falling short in his attempts to sign PSG star Edinson Cavani, according to the Daily Express.

The Gunners have already lost Lukas Podolski to Inter, whilst fellow forward Joel Campbell is being linked with a loan exit of his own in the coming weeks.

Despite already having options in Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez, Wenger is desperate for a sharp-eyed and powerful attack to lead his line as the Gunners go in search of a top four finish.

Arsenal had been linked with a move for Uruguay international Cavani, but have ultimately been scared off by his £60m price tag.

Wenger has insisted that he does not want to spend so much money on one single player and will apparently turn his attentions to Mandzukic as an alternative.

The former Bayern star has not made the impact many had hoped for in La Liga, and is thought to be keen on making a move to re-establish himself as one of Europe’s most prolific strikers.
