The England international, has refused to commit to a new deal at the Etihad Stadium despite his current contract expiring in the summer, and has reportedly told his club colleagues that he expects to depart on a free transfer at the end of the season.

FIFA rules have allowed Milner to speak to clubs outside of England with six months to go on his deal, but although the likes of AS Roma and Inter Milan have shown interest, Milner is thought to prefer a move to the Premier League.

Milner has been a regular topic of conversation for Liverpool’s infamous transfer committee, and his dynamism, versatility and proven Premier League ability would make him something of a risk free signing – as would the fact that he is available for nothing.

With club captain Gerrard having announced his intention to join MLS outfit LA Galaxy at the start of July, Milner could be a tailor made replacement.

The Reds have also been linked with Fabian Delph, but Tottenham Hotspur are the stronger linked side.
