The defender believes that if they can keep up their form then they have a chance to creep up the table. They haven’t lost in 10 matches, with their last defeat coming at the beginning of November.
With the team already in third in the league, any advance would leave them involved in the title race with Manchester City and Chelsea.
“If we can prolong our consistency and continue our hard work in training, things will click and we’ll creep up the league,” said Smalling.
“Going into the New Year on the back of a good run means that it’s a case of working even harder to climb the table and get as many points as we can.
“We need to do as much as possible on the pitch and, as an individual, do as much as we can in terms of recovery and extra work.”
However, the Red Devils are nine points off the top of the league at the moment so it will take a lot of effort as well as mistakes from those above for them to catch up.
The Old Trafford based side play Southampton next, and if the Saints come out victorious then they will overtake them and go third.
