Tottenham Hotspur legend Clive Allen has said that Harry Kane has the potential to break the Premier League’s all-time goals record.

Former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer currently holds the record, having found the net 260 times – 73 more goals than closest rival Andy Cole.

Kane is only on 10 Premier League goals – from 27 games – at present.

However, the hard-working 21-year-old has made major improvements over the last 12 months and, with time on his side, he should aim for Shearer’s record, according to Allen.

“I am sure you look at players from the past who do what you do and who you would like to emulate,” Allen told BBC Radio 5 live.

“So, I have no doubt Harry has got his eye on it and he is being compared to players like Alan Shearer at the moment.

“He is the best goal-scorer the Premier League has seen and his record is there to be shot at.

“‘Why not have a go for it Harry’, that is what I would say to him.

“I was fortunate to break the great Jimmy Greaves’ goalscoring record at Spurs, but people said that it would never be done, so sky is the limit for the young man.”
