With Messi, 27, reportedly on bad terms with club president Josep Bartomeu, the Argentina legend is said to be closer to leaving the Camp Nou than ever before.

Chelsea apparently lead the race for Messi, with some newspapers claiming that the Blues are willing to activate his £200m release clause.

Fabregas, who cost Chelsea £30m when he left Barca in June, says it would be brilliant to play alongside Messi again.

He told Onda Cero: “Leo will do whatever makes him happy. As his friend and former team-mate, it would be great if I get the chance to play with him again.”

However, Fabregas was quick to stress that he is attempting to convince Messi to leave Barca.

The former Arsenal captain also said that he thinks that Messi’s reported Barca discontent has been blown out of all proportion.

He added: “His situation has been made out to be worse than it really is. Messi is happy at Barcelona and the club’s happy with him.

“I get a bad feeling about it when people are saying that I am trying to convince Messi to join Chelsea. What makes people think I can discuss contracts? I am just a footballer.

“I don’t really know Luis Enrique. I know Messi, though, and I really doubt that the things people say happened really did happen.

“Leo is a quiet guy and I have never seen anything like that during the three years we were team-mates.”
