Lambert joined the club he supported as a boy over the summer, completing a £4.5m switch from Southampton – but since then things haven’t gone that well for the 32-year-old.

The striker has managed to score just two goals in 22 appearances since arriving on Merseyside and has largely been considered a flop by fans and pundits alike.

Crystal Palace had been interested in signing Lambert, as new manager Alan Pardew seeks to put his stamp on the South London club and steer them clear of relegation.

Yet the Eagles will not be landing the England international over the next m0nth with Brendan Rodgers viewing the forward as a key part of his squad.

It was always understood that Lambert would be a backup player when he made the switch from the Saints and has been under scrutiny because of injuries to Daniel Sturridge and the poor performances of fellow new signing Mario Balotelli.

Fabio Borini has also failed to impress and both he and Balotelli could well be leaving the club as Rodgers looks to alternatives.
