The Reds are looking to resurrect their campaign after a disastrous first half to the season, but will be without a number of stars this weekend wen they head to the Stadium of Light.

Adam Lallana is suffering from a thigh injury sustained against Leicester City, and is set to miss a month of football.

Joe Allen has been struggling all season with a knee injury, as has Jon Flanagan who is still recovering after knee surgery.

Daniel Sturridge has only just returned from treatment in the USA, with recurring injuries keeping him out for the most of the season.

Brad Jones and Glen Johnson have also picked up minor knocks in the last few games, while Kolo Toure is away with Ivory Coast for the African Cup of Nations.

Gus Poyet’s Black Cats have been notoriously hard to beat this season, a feat which won’t be made any easier with all these absences.
