According to the Metro, the Spanish giants are keeping an eye on de Gea’s contract situation at Old Trafford, with the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper no closer to renewing his current deal.

De Gea appears to be holding out for a move to the Bernabeu, with Real making him their top target to come in as a long-term replacement for the legendary Iker Casillas, whose performances have been in decline for some time.

De Gea, meanwhile, has shown himself to be one of the finest goalkeepers in Europe this season, taking his game to a new level after a slow start to life in England.

The 24-year-old may now opt to return to La Liga if Real maintain their interest, and United may not be in the best position to negotiate if his contract remains unsigned.
