Mauricio Pochettino was thought to be keen on bringing the Saints’ French midfielder to the club, but with a deal looking unlikely, he has turned his attention to McCarthy.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez claims he has no intention of selling the defensive midfielder, but if his £25m valuation is met then he may be convinced.

Everton have been struggling somewhat this season, but McCarthy has a close relationship with Martinez. The Republic of Ireland international has played 57 times for for the Merseysiders, while also playing 133 games for Martinez’s former team Wigan Athletic.

If Spurs can keep up their current form, then they could even make the Champions League next season; surely an attractive prospect for McCarthy.

Harry Kane has shot to prominence this season, and looks to be inspiring a fantastic second half of the season for the North London side.
