The Dutch youngster has struggled since his move to Stamford Bridge, missing most of last season through injury and failing to find top form in a temporary spell at the San Siro this term.

Although van Ginkel is a highly regarded talent, his future looks uncertain this winter as he seems unlikely to walk straight into the Chelsea team if he does seal a return to the club.

Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic have proved to be a superb midfield combination for the Blues this season, while the likes of Ramires and John Obi Mikel are also options for Jose Mourinho as backup.

Chelsea had hoped the 22-year-old would benefit from more playing time at Milan, but he has failed to impress Filippo Inzaghi.
