The Red Devils suffered only their second loss at Old Trafford this season in the 1-0 reverse, and their defence has been accused of being at fault for the Saints’ goal. Now Savage has said that United won’t be able to challenge for the Champions League or the Premier League until they sign some better players for their back line.

“United’s back three are pathetic. Too many gaps between them. They can’t defend, they can’t defend!” the former Blackburn player exclaimed.

The former trainee at the Mancunian club was especially unhappy with the performances of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who he thinks have been at the club long enough now to not be making silly mistakes. The other member of the back three for the match was Daley Blind, who to be fair was only just coming back from a serious knee injury.

“They keep making errors. [Phil] Jones has been here long enough to grab that centre half position by the scruff of the neck, so has [Chris] Smalling. So why haven’t they? Unless United change the situation by buying quality defenders, they aren’t gonna challenge for Premier League titles or the Champions League,” he added.

The defeat means that Manchester United drop in to fourth in the league, with the South Coast club overtaking them to go third. To add to this disappointment, Arsenal are now only one point behind Louis van Gaal’s side.
