Sunderland are looking to sign former England and Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe during the January transfer window, with the Mail reporting that the Black Cats are lining up an intriguing swap move that would see goal shy forward Jozy Altidure move in the opposite direction to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC.

Defoe is unsettled in Canada and his club are also keen to get him off the wage bill and end the former England star’s MLS nightmare, whilst Altidore’s goalscoring record at Sunderland has become the butt of plenty of jokes and moving him on from Sunderland will also be one of Gus Poyet’s aims for the January window.

The biggest obstacle to the respective deal is the huge wage packet that Defoe is currently taking home in Toronto, with Sunderland perhaps set to struggle to match the £70,000 per weak deal, but Toronto are interested in a straight swap for Altidore if the Black Cats are able to strike a deal with Defoe.

Poyet’s side are in danger of tumbling back into the relegation picture due to the lack of goals that have blighted their season, with only the freak 8-0 defeat to Southampton masking a relatively solid defensive record.
