The Anfield giants have been on the trail of the England international for months, and though his contract in the Midlands expires at the end of the season, Rodgers is keen to bring him to Anfield this month.

Brazilian defensive midfielder Lucas has lost his status as a guaranteed starter under Brendan Rodgers this season.

He is said to be keen on reuniting with former manager Rafael Benitez at the San Paolo after he initially brought him to Merseyside back in 2007.

Benitez himself has been chasing the Brazil international since he first joined the Serie A giants in the summer of 2013.

Lucas is set to be made available for loan if Liverpool can get their hands on Delph, and Benitez is hopeful of finally landing his man.

Delph is set to return to the Villa side this weekend to face the Reds after serving out a three-match ban over the Christmas period.
