Having entered the final six months of his current contract at the Emirates Stadium the teenager is free to start discussions with foreign clubs over a summer move.

Eredivisie duo Feyenoord and FC Twente are also interested in signing Akpom, but Gunners manager Arsene Wenger wants to retain the services of the England Under-20s international and has offered this new deal as a result.

Having allowed Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo to leave North London on-loan during this January transfer window – to Inter Milan and Crystal Palace respectively – Wenger cannot afford to lose anymore attacking talent.

Not that Akpom has exactly been a stalwart in the first team, with the youngster managing three substitute appearances so far this season which has resulted in a total of 24 minutes of game time.

However, Wenger strongly believes that the Englishman will be a star for the club in the future and with so many sides looking to sign him will need to secure the attacker as soon as possible.

Several Premier League clubs are also thought to be interested in Akpom, who has previously enjoyed loan spells at Brentford and Coventry City.
