The in-form New Zealand international is out of contract at Upton Park in the summer and has attracted plenty of interest from top clubs in recent times, with Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur also chasing him.

However, the Gunners are unwilling to pay the required £8m to bring the centre-back to the Emirates Stadium this month, meaning Tottenham may now be the favourites to snap him up for free in the summer.

This would be a major blow for Arsenal in their hunt for defensive reinforcements, with injuries exposing the team’s lack of depth in that position this season since Thomas Vermaelen was sold to Barcelona.

Reid would be an ideal purchase on the cheap for Arsenal, but Arsene Wenger had hoped he could move for closer to the £4-5m mark.
