Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers plans to rest captain Steven Gerrard against Aston Villa this afternoon to ensure that the 34-year-old is fit for Tuesday’s Capital One Cup semi-final first leg with Chelsea, according to the Daily Mail.

Gerrard was subbed at Sunderland last week with tight hamstring, but he trained this morning.

However, Rodgers is seemingly reluctant to risk his skipper at Villa Park.

Liverpool start the weekend eighth in the Premier League table, five points below Manchester United in fourth place.
