Van Gaal to press ahead with move for Saints star.

Despite playing down all transfer speculation on Friday, sources close to Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal are claiming that the club will make a move for Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne during the January transfer window, according to ESPN.

United were said to have made Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman their number on target this month, but since those plans fell through they have been forced to shift their focus to reinforcing their defensive options instead.

Roma have told United that they won’t sell the Dutch international this month, so Van Gaal will now be forced to wait until the summer before making a serious move.

Clyne has been a long time target for United, but the Saints are also adamant that they want to hold on to the England international until the summer, too, though United will try to press them into striking a deal this month.

But United have a list of up to 12 defensive targets including the likes of Mats Hummels, Diego Godin and PSG starlet Marquinhos, and considering the club’s defensive issues over the course of the season they may want to make a new addition in that area a priority.
