With Sunderland pushing for an equaliser, goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon went upfield for a corner kick and was left stranded when Spurs launched a counter-attack, which ended in Jan Vertonghen passing the ball into the net from long range.

Vertonghen, who had got on the scoresheet earlier in the game, celebrated how one would expect a defender who’d just notched a brace to celebrate.

However, his partying was cut short by the linesman, who flagged for offside.

When the ball was played to Vertonghen, there was only one opposition player between him and the goal.

However, he was well inside his own half, so – like nearly all football fans know – he cannot be called offside.

We all knew that, but did the assistant referee?
