Arsenal Ready To Offer Midfielder New Deal After Fine Recent Form

Francis Coquelin has cemented his place in the Gunners squad following a loan spell at Charlton Athletic.

Arsenal are set to open contract talks with central midfielder Francis Coquelin after the Frenchman’s impressive recent form for the club upon returning from an early season loan spell in the Championship with Charlton Athletic, report the Mirror, with Coquelin’s current deal due to expire at the end of the season.

Coquelin also had a loan spell in the Bundesliga with Freiburg last season, where he caught the eye with some tough performances for the team from the Black Forest, and his muscle and energy has been in evidence since he broke into the Arsenal first team in recent weeks.

Whilst it is unclear whether Arsene Wenger views Coquelin as the long term solution to his woes in the defensive midfield position, the fact that experienced duo Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are both out of contract at the end of the season makes it more likely that Coquelin will be kept on as a squad player at least.
